This paper reviews research by scientists interested in cognition and pedagogy, which has shown that students have more physics problem solving capability than is usually thought. The following paper reports the preliminary results of a study, which uses these strategies in introductory physics courses that emphasize problem solving. This article provides instructional strategies as possible solutions for teachers whose students leave introductory courses unable to reason qualitatively about physical processes and use primitive formula-centered problem-solving techniques.
