The PIPS was extensively research validated through review of the literature, drawing from existing instruments, pilot testing at two institutions, and review by an expert panel. The final instrument was administered at 6 different institutions with the items being validated through exploratory factor analysis, reliability measures, and iteration of the instrument based on the results.
