Familiar Context Force Concept Inventory (FC-FCI)

Developed by Jane Jackson

Purpose To assess students’ understanding of the most basic concepts in Newtonian physics using everyday language and common-sense distractors, using contexts that are more "everyday" or "feminine.
Format Pre/post, Multiple-choice
Duration 30 min

Research-based Validation
This is the lowest level of research validation, corresponding to at least one of the validation categories below.

Research Validation Summary

Based on Research Into:

  • Student thinking

Studied Using:

  • Student interviews
  • Expert review
  • Appropriate statistical analysis

Research Conducted:

  • At multiple institutions
  • By multiple research groups
  • Peer-reviewed publication

No research has been done on the FC-FCI beyond the research done on the original FCI and the G-FCI, upon which it is based.

Typical Results

There are no typical results available for the FC-FCI.

The FC-FCI is on one of several variations of the original Force Concept Inventory, all of which have the same answer key:

The latest version of the FC-FCI, V2003, was released in March 2003. This "familiar contexts" version of the FCI is an adaptation of the Gender FCI, which was adapted from the original FCI by Laura McCullough. In March 2003, Jane Jackson made these changes from Laura McCullough's version 3, with her approval: questions #8-11 are the same as the 1995 revision; the wording of questions #1, 13, and 26 were slightly changed to clarify the situations.
